Fertilizer Prices Ahead of Spring Application: Is Now the Time to Buy?

By AgAlmanac Markets Desk

Anhydrous ammonia and DAP prices have pulled back from last year's highs. A breakdown of current price levels, what's driving them, and whether to buy now or wait.

Fertilizer prices are a major input cost for most crop operations, and getting the timing right on purchases can meaningfully impact your cost per acre. Here's the current picture.

Current Price Levels

Anhydrous ammonia has pulled back to the $600โ€“$650/ton range in most Midwest markets, down from peaks above $1,400/ton in 2022. DAP (diammonium phosphate) is running $550โ€“$600/ton. Potash has stabilized around $350โ€“$380/ton.

What's Driving Lower Prices

Three factors have pushed fertilizer prices down from their peaks: normalized natural gas prices in Europe (which drives nitrogen production costs), new potash supply coming online from Canpotex, and softer global demand as high prices pushed producers toward reduced application rates.

Buy Now or Wait?

The honest answer is that nobody knows with certainty. However, a few factors favor locking in at least a portion of spring needs now:

- Natural gas prices in Europe have been volatile, and any weather event could push them โ€” and nitrogen prices โ€” higher quickly - Retail supply chains have improved, but early buyers still tend to get better basis - Your spring application window is fixed; your fertilizer purchase window is not

A practical approach: lock in 50โ€“60% of spring needs at current levels, and leave the rest open to catch any further pullback. This hedges your position without trying to time a market bottom perfectly.

Cost Per Acre Impact

At current prices, nitrogen for a 180 bu/acre corn crop runs approximately $90โ€“$110/acre depending on your application rate and local basis. That's $20โ€“$30/acre lower than the 2022 peak. That margin matters โ€” know your numbers before you buy.
