That pace matters because pollination and early grain fill are highly sensitive to heat, moisture stress, and disease pressure, so the crop is entering a stretch where field scouting has a higher return than calendar-based assumptions.
Condition ratings are not as strong as the development pace. USDA NASS estimated corn at 63% good to excellent as of July 26, down from 67% the prior week and below 73% at the same point last year. Soybeans showed a similar pattern: 80% blooming and 47% setting pods, both ahead of the five-year averages, but the national soybean crop was rated 63% good to excellent, down from 66% the prior week and below 70% last year.
That split between fast development and slipping ratings is the key operating story this week. USDA's numbers show crops are not broadly "behind," but the condition trend says the crop is being asked to finish under less forgiving weather and moisture conditions than earlier-season ratings implied. DTN reported that many areas remained in need of rain even after a cooler week, with hot temperatures, scattered showers, and continued dryness expected into early August.
Field conditions vary sharply by region. The U.S. Drought Monitor reported degradations across parts of the Plains, Upper Midwest, and Florida during the week ending July 21, while rainfall improved drought-affected areas in parts of the South, Southeast, Mid-Atlantic, and Northeast. The same report described hot and dry conditions across the central and northern Plains, with temperatures 2 to more than 10 degrees Fahrenheit above normal and reports of poor rangeland conditions.
The northern and western Corn Belt deserves close watching. The Drought Monitor noted degradations in Minnesota, Iowa, Wisconsin, and Michigan tied to above-normal temperatures and 30-day precipitation shortfalls. In the High Plains, drought-related conditions deteriorated in the Dakotas and Nebraska, with average weekly temperatures 4 to more than 10 degrees Fahrenheit above normal across the Dakotas and Nebraska.
The near-term outlook keeps the pressure on operations planning. The National Weather Service 6-to-10-day outlook valid July 27-31 favored above-normal temperatures across most of the contiguous United States, including the Plains, Texas, and western portions of the Midwest. The same outlook favored below-normal precipitation across eastern portions of the central and southern Plains, Texas, the South, and the Midwest.
For farmers, that makes "timely" decisions less about planting speed and more about triage. In corn, the practical questions are where pollination stress is most likely, whether fungicide or insecticide applications still pencil out, and whether fields with uneven moisture should be prioritized for scouting. USDA's condition decline and the Drought Monitor's regional dryness both support a more field-specific approach than a blanket assumption that fast development equals low risk.
In soybeans, the decision window is also narrowing. Wisconsin Extension reported soybean blooming underway in Wisconsin fields earlier in July and advised growers to revisit post-emergence herbicide labels for timing limits as early-planted soybeans reached reproductive stages. The same Extension outlook advised continued scouting for weeds, corn and soybean disease, tar spot in corn, white mold in soybeans, Japanese beetles, and corn rootworm activity.
Small grains are shifting from crop-care decisions into harvest logistics. USDA reported winter wheat harvest at 81% complete nationally by July 26, slightly ahead of the five-year average of 79%. USDA also reported spring wheat 92% headed and 2% harvested, while spring wheat condition held at 53% good to excellent. For mixed operations, that means labor, trucking, storage, and scouting time are all competing during the same late-July window.
Input costs remain part of the operations story even after planting. University of Illinois farmdoc reported that central Illinois fertilizer costs rose by more than $20 per acre based on April pricing compared with the six months before the Iran conflict. Farmdoc also reported anhydrous ammonia at $1,123 per ton by April 17, compared with a September-through-February average of $828 per ton, while 28% nitrogen solution rose from $436 to $543 per ton by May 1.
Those cost increases affect farms unevenly. Farmdoc noted that producers who purchased fertilizer before February would see limited 2026 cost impacts, while farms that delayed nitrogen purchases faced a disadvantage from recent price increases. Farmdoc also warned that many farms are expected to face significantly higher costs for the 2027 crop, making current-season nutrient notes, yield maps, and application records more valuable for fall planning.
The broader cost structure reinforces the need to manage for margin rather than only yield. CME Group reported that USDA Economic Research Service forecast inflation-adjusted net farm income to fall 2.6% year over year, and CME cited break-even levels of $4.70-$4.90 per bushel for corn and $10.80-$11.25 for soybeans to cover all costs without government support. CME also reported that fertilizer often accounts for 20% to 30% of total production expenses, based on USDA data.
The operating takeaway for this week is straightforward: the crop is developing, but it is not coasting. USDA's July 26 numbers show corn and soybeans ahead of average on reproductive progress, while condition ratings have slipped and weather outlooks keep heat and uneven rainfall in the forecast. For growers, the best next move is disciplined field-by-field scouting, careful attention to label timing, and input decisions tied to actual crop stage, moisture status, pest pressure, and expected return.
