By early August, the 2026 row-crop season has moved out of planting mode and into yield-protection mode. Spring planting itself was broadly close to normal in major Corn Belt areas: University of Illinois farmdoc reported that Illinois corn and soybean planting in 2026 moved at a near-normal pace despite some wet and cold stretches in April and May.
The current USDA NASS Crop Progress report shows corn and soybeans moving through key reproductive stages ahead of normal in several categories. As of August 2, USDA estimated U.S. corn silking at 90%, corn dough at 43%, and corn dented at 6%; soybeans were 88% blooming and 62% setting pods, according to DTN's summary of USDA NASS data.
Condition ratings tell a more cautious story. USDA rated corn 61% good to excellent as of August 2, down from 63% the prior week and below 73% at the same time last year; soybeans were rated 63% good to excellent, steady with the previous week but below 69% last year.
That puts the management focus squarely on moisture, disease pressure, and field-by-field triage. NOAA's August Monthly Drought Outlook says July brought improvement across the lower Mississippi Valley, Tennessee Valley, and much of the East, but also drought expansion across the upper Midwest, parts of the High Plains, and far southern Texas.
NOAA also warns that persistent heat across the Plains and upper Midwest will keep evapotranspiration demand high, with drought development likely where forecasts stay drier than average. That matters because corn is now in dough and early dent in many fields, while soybeans are setting pods, meaning the crop is converting canopy, roots, and soil water into final grain weight.
Iowa gives a useful snapshot of the split conditions many growers are seeing. The Iowa Crop Progress and Condition Report for July 27 through August 2 listed 5.7 days suitable for fieldwork, topsoil moisture at 10% very short, 25% short, 60% adequate, and 5% surplus, and subsoil moisture at 10% very short, 27% short, 58% adequate, and 5% surplus.
Iowa's crop ratings remained much stronger than the national figures, with corn at 80% good to excellent and soybeans at 78% good to excellent, but western Iowa still needed moisture according to Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Mike Naig's weekly comments.
The weather summary behind that report explains why August scouting can look so uneven. Iowa saw a hot, humid start to the week, then cooler and wetter weather late in the reporting period; statewide average rainfall was 1.31 inches versus a normal 0.90 inch, but local weekly totals ranged from 0.05 inch at Spirit Lake to 6.93 inches in Manchester.
Those local differences should drive local decisions. Iowa State University Extension reported in its July 20-28 regional update that excessive heat had hurt corn in drought areas, crop progress was moving rapidly, and a warm August would continue to speed the crop along.
Soybeans deserve close attention now because Iowa State Extension described August as a critical period for maximizing soybean yield, with soil moisture, weed control, insect pressure, and disease pressure all contributing to final results.
Fungicide decisions are one of the big operational questions this week. Iowa State Extension notes that fungicides protect yield potential by reducing foliar disease within the canopy, but tight margins make it important to evaluate whether a spray is justified before pulling the trigger.
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension gives a similar field-level caution for corn and soybean fungicide decisions, especially around tar spot risk. Nebraska Extension says pivot-irrigated fields and areas with frequent rainfall should be scouted regularly because overhead irrigation can reduce canopy temperature and increase humidity and leaf wetness for several hours.
The practical takeaway is not "spray everything" or "spray nothing." The practical takeaway is to scout first, prioritize fields with disease history and yield potential, and match treatment windows to crop stage and forecast. That approach lines up with Iowa State Extension's emphasis on tight margins and Nebraska Extension's emphasis on scouting higher-risk environments.
Input costs keep sharpening those decisions. Farm Progress, citing economists from Texas A&M AgriLife Extension and Oklahoma State University Extension, reported that low commodity prices and high production costs were expected to persist in 2026, and that fertilizer prices rose in 2025, including roughly 15% increases for potash and nitrogen fertilizer and almost 19% for phosphate between April and September.
That same outlook notes that natural gas is a major input for nitrogen fertilizer production, which links energy-market volatility to ammonia, urea, and UAN costs. It also warns that fertilizer markets can be affected by tariffs, sanctions, and export policies in countries such as Russia, Belarus, and China.
For farmers, that means August operations are already connected to 2027 planning. Tissue tests, late-season stalk checks, yield maps, and notes on where drought or disease cut yield will matter when fertilizer budgets and seed decisions are made this winter. Farm Progress' extension-backed outlook says producers should work closely with retailers, agronomists, and other experts who monitor local market conditions.
The 2026 crop is not made yet. USDA's latest national ratings show enough slippage to keep risk on the table, NOAA's drought outlook keeps heat and moisture stress in focus, and extension updates point toward a careful, field-specific finish.
For operators, the best move this week is disciplined scouting: check moisture stress, disease pressure, insect activity, stalk integrity, and pod set before spending money. The calendar says August, but the work is already about protecting harvest and setting up the next crop year.
